What is reading intervention?

Reading intervention involves intensive or targeted instruction on reading skills to accelerate the reading abilities of students who are reading below grade level. Reading intervention meets students where they are at, as no two students are the same. One student may struggle with letter sounds and may need phonics instruction, while another may struggle with reading comprehension and need additional strategies to comprehend what they are reading. By addressing specific skill gaps in phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension, it is designed to significantly improve progress. This way, students can find success in the classroom and build confidence in their personal skillsets.

What are reading targets?

1. Phonemic awareness ● Can they isolate sounds? Do they know the beginning, middle and ending sounds in a word? ● Are they able to blend sounds into words correctly? ● Are they able to complete word chaining activities? In word chaining you can add, delete and substitute phonemes in order to recognize and read words effortlessly. 2. Phonics ● Are they able to recognize all letters and the sounds they can make? ● There are 26 letters in the English alphabet, but there are 44 sounds. There are 240 ways to spell these sounds, which is what makes reading so challenging. 3. Fluency ● Can they read accurately and at an appropriate pace? ● Are they able to read with expression depending on dialogue and punctuation? 4. Vocabulary ● Do they know what individual words mean and how to use them in the right context? 5. Comprehension ● Are they able to truly understand what they read? ● Readers who are comprehending what they read can visualize a story, anticipate what’s going to happen next, laugh at jokes, and make inferences about what the author is telling them.

Why participate in interventions at Smart Love?

At Smart Love, we believe that academic success is not just a matter of cognitive ability, but of inner emotional comfort. Reading is one of the most vulnerable tasks a child undertakes as it requires a willingness to take risks, handle mistakes, and persist through frustration. By applying the Smart Love principles of Inner Happiness to literacy, we move beyond simple drills to address the "affective" side of learning. When a child feels unconditionally supported and emotionally regulated, their learning brain opens up, which generates a limitless ceiling of what they can accomplish. Our intervention program doesn't just teach decoding and fluency, it fosters the self-confidence and psychological safety a child needs to transform the challenge of reading into a source of lasting joy and competence.
