Exploring shapes with vegetable and fruit stamping!

istockphoto-985032688-612x612.jpg

Have fun exploring the beautiful shapes that vegetables and fruits can make!

Activity Instructions

Prepare your workspace by laying down newspaper and cover any furniture in the event there are any drops of paint.
Be sure that your child is in clothes that are okay to get messy.
Cut your fruits and vegetables in half so that you can see seeds and shapes inside. Be sure to save some as a snack too!
Have fun exploring the insides of the produce with your child - I wonder what we will find inside? Will it be green inside? Will it be red inside? I wonder how many seeds we will find?
Cut your fruits and vegetables vertically too so you can compare and contrast with your child. I wonder how this shape is different than this shape?
Discuss the difference between fruits and vegetables with your child. Explain that fruits have seeds inside, but vegetables do not! I wonder if this apple is a fruit or a vegetable? I wonder if this celery is a fruit or a vegetable?
Pour the paint on several plates so they have different colors to choose from.
Then demonstrate "stamping" to your child by taking a piece of fruit or vegetable, dipping it in the paint, then stamping it on the art paper or newspaper.
Encourage curiosity and creativity by asking questions like, I wonder what happens when you dip the apple in blue and then in yellow? I wonder what happens when you twist the fruit on the paper?
When you are done, hang your masterpiece up to dry! Maybe revisit it a day or two later - I wonder what fruit made that shape? I wonder what vegetable made that shape?

Supplies Needed

Washable paint (tempera)
Fruits and vegetables (celery, apples, lemons, broccoli, strawberries, corn, etc.)
Paper
Plates

I Wonder...

I wonder statements are a great way to introduce concepts to children, stimulate their curiosity while modeling the pleasure of learning, and embrace ideas in a fun and unpressured way!

I wonder how many seeds are inside this apple?
I wonder what color is on the inside of this zucchini?
I wonder if this lemon is a fruit or vegetable?
I wonder what happens when we mix two colors together?
