Let's Grow Garlic Scapes!

Watch in amazement as garlic scapes grow in front of your eyes!
Activity Instructions
Mark your cup or plant with a marker to show your child how much dirt to fill in the pot. Give them a small shovel or spoon to scoop up the soil and place in the pot.
Take your garlic cloves and place in the soil. Be sure that the flat end is down in the dirt and the pointed tip is up!
Then cover the cloves with soil, but be sure to leave the tips exposed. This way you and your child can see what is happening!
Now fill a cup with just the right amount of water, and have your child water the soil.
Place your pot in a sunny windowsill, then watch and wait!
In a few days, roots will start to appear! Carefully pull out the clove and observe - I wonder what is happening? Afterwards, gently place the cloves back into the pot with its roots facing down and cover back up with the soil.
After 7 to 10 days, you will begin to see your scrapes grow. They can grow very long, but the most flavorful scrapes are the young shoots - no more than 5 inches tall.
Use your garlic scrapes to make garlic bread, saute them in butter and put over noodles! Yum!

I Wonder...
I wonder statements are a great way to introduce concepts to children, stimulate their curiosity while modeling the pleasure of learning, and embrace ideas in a fun and unpressured way!
- I wonder what color the garlic scapes will be?
I wonder what the garlic scapes will smell like?
I wonder what the garlic scapes will taste like?
I wonder how tall the garlic scapes will grow?
