Tweet Tweet - Time to Feed the Birds!

One of the many joys of the warmer weather is the many different kinds of birds that come out to play. It’s been a delight listening to all of their songs! In this activity, we'll give the birds a snack with a fun bird feeder!

The first step to creating your very own bird feeder is to use something that will be the structure of the bird feeder. I found a toilet paper roll or a paper towel roll cut in half works quite nicely. If you can’t find a toilet paper roll or paper towel roll, pinecones can be fun to use as well!

Next, using a piece of your hanging material, thread it through the toilet paper roll then knot it at the top.

After, you’ll need some peanut butter or soy butter to help the bird seed or cheerios stick. A nice layer spread around the tube will do the trick! You can use a butter knife to do the spreading or the back of a spoon works nicely as well.

Next, the birdseed or cheerios can be added. I found it easiest to pour the cheerios onto a plate and then stick the bird food on by rolling the sticky tube onto the food and then placing cheerios on by hand to fill in the gaps. Or you could extend the fun by squishing the cheerrios in a baggie, putting the cheerrio crumbs on a plate and then rolling the sticky tube into the crumbs.

Lastly, the bird feeders are ready to be hung and enjoyed by the birds! Hang your feeder so the birds can enjoy this yummy treat.

I wonder...

I wonder statements are a great way to introduce concepts to children, stimulate their curiosity while modeling the pleasure of learning, and embrace ideas in a fun and unpressured way!

I wonder what birds will come to visit?
I wonder if other animals will enjoy the snack too?
