Whoosh! Explore wind with a Windsock!

Have fun exploring wind with your child with this fun craft and activity!

To create your windsock invite your preschooler to decorate a piece of paper in any way they choose...dots, stripes, zig-zags or swiggles are all fun ways to develop pre-writing skills.

Next cut ribbon, string, or crepe paper and attach to the back side of paper with tape. To build in some fun math skills you could measure the ribbon using a ruler while counting the number of ribbons as you tape them on. Once the ribbon is attached roll your decorated paper to create a cylinder and secure with tape.

Punch two holes at the top of the paper on opposite sides and thread the sting through to create a handle.
Now you’re ready to take your windsock on a walk outside.

To extend the fun take a clipboard paper and pen with you to capture your preschoolers observations.

Can you hang your windsock on something outside and watch it blow from your window inside?

Not a windy day outside? It’s also fun to play with your windsock inside! It might be fun to turn on some music and dance with your windsock.

I wonder...

I wonder statements are a great way to introduce concepts to children, stimulate their curiosity while modeling the pleasure of learning, and embrace ideas in a fun and unpressured way!

I wonder which way the ribbons are blowing?
I wonder if the wind is strong or light today?
I wonder what else is blowing?
I wonder if the leaves, flags, your clothes/hair are moving in the wind?
    I wonder what makes wind?
I wonder if the wind is warm or cold today?
I wonder if you use a straw or empty paper towel tube if you can make the ribbons on your windsock move? I I wonder what else in your house makes wind? Maybe a fan or hair dryer?
I wonder, does it blow hot or cold air?
